Enriching Lives with Affordable Housing

A senior real estate agent at D.R. Horton in Los Angeles, Taylor Tomnitz was the company’s top sales agent in 2016 for both the number of homes sold and the total dollar volume. Mixing business with philanthropy, Taylor Tomnitz supports Habitat for Humanity, an organization with a vision of helping every person have a decent place to live.

Many American families are in need of affordable, quality housing. More than half of all Americans admit to making trade-offs such as reducing health care coverage at one point in their lives to pay the rent or mortgage. The following family is an example.

Evan lived with his wife Kittie and their two sons in the San Francisco Bay Area. Both Evan and Kittie are teachers who were paying up to 60 percent of their income on rent before Kittie decided to stay home to take care of their children.

Evan and Kittie’s home had mold problems, which complicated their son Sean’s allergies. Evan was unsure of how he could continue working at the school and pay his rent.

Luckily, Evan came across a Habitat for Humanity flier and reached out to the organization. The family qualified for Habitat’s affordable housing program.

Evan now lives with his family in a rehabbed home in East Palo Alto. The home’s mortgage is affordable, and Sean’s allergy symptoms have improved.
